Promise

The night had been a busy one. Lisa leaned against the bar with a sigh, letting Adam’s fan cool her. Before her, the diner was finally thinning out, patrons slipping away, leaving their payment slips and cash on their tables for the servers and bus boys to collect. The hum of conversation slowly faded and she could hear the music filtering through the speakers overhead.

Danny walked in, smiling to the hostess as she directed him to his table, and then to Lisa as he sat down. Lisa stood up again and walked over, ignoring a menu this time. Danny’s requests never changed.

“Wine?”

“Please.” Danny’s eyes were steady as they moved up her body again. “Your nu –”

Lisa shook her head and smiled. She was beginning to feel more confident in answering his flirtation now. She supposed it just took time and getting used to someone like him. “You know how this goes. You ask for my number and I remind you that I am, technically, still married.”

She returned to the bar, leaving Danny to ponder that. When she returned with his glass, the brightness of his eyes told her that he was still not daunted.

“Can I ask you a question, a serious one?” Danny looked up at her as she set down his glass.

“Sure.” Lisa waved her hand.

“Since you’re separated, would your husband really care if you gave a man your phone number?”

The answer to that question was, of course, no. Sebastian had been very straightforward about what this separation meant, and she never knew him to be fickle about anything. She could lie to Danny and say he would be, or that it would jeopardize her standing when they finally divorced. She was terribly at lying, though.

“I didn’t think so.” Danny seemed to read her thoughts. “I don’t know the whole story, I know that. I just, you’re always cheerful but I can see it in the way you stand and the way the corner of your lip turns down when you think no one is looking at you. The world has changed since the last time you were single and it excites you. You want to enjoy it, and I think you should.”

It was unsettling the way he had read her. His clarity and openness made it tempting.

“I’m just not ready for dating,” Lisa said. “You seem so nice and I wouldn’t want to hurt you by rebounding.”

Danny gave a light laugh that drifted around them, drawing Adam’s attention from the bar briefly. Again, Lisa felt that sense of embarrassment. She had misjudged his intentions again.

She really was not ready for any of this.

“I don’t want to date you.” Danny sipped his wine and set it down. “That’s not my intention but I can see why you thought so. I’ll tell you what. I won’t ask for your phone number if you promise you will come home with me tonight.”

“Why?”

A grin twisted Danny’s lip up. “To have sex of course.”
